Handmade Marbled Paper
With marbling paint, you can create unique paper that can be used to make handmade cards, gift card holders, gift tags, and more. Once you try your hand at marbling, we’re sure that you’ll be hooked! Each time you swirl paints in the tray, you’ll get a different marbled effect so every piece of paper will truly be one of a kind.
Supplies & Tools:
- Cardstock or blank cards
- Marabu Easy Marble paints*
- Water
- Toothpicks
- Aluminum tray (large enough to fit your paper/cards; ours is 8" x 8")
- Kraft paper or newspaper
- Paper towels
*Marabu Easy Marble paints are our preferred paints for this craft, but you could also use Testors enamel paints or suminagashi marbling paints. Just keep in mind that drying times and final results will vary.
Directions:
- Cover work surface with kraft paper.
Note: Make sure that you are working in a well-ventilated area, as the paint has strong vapors. - Fill tray halfway with water and place on top of kraft paper.
- Mix/shake enamel paint per the instructions on bottle.
- Using 1–3 colors, pour a drop or two of each color into the water. The paint will float on the surface of the water.
- Take a toothpick and swirl the colors to create marbled effect.
Note: It’s critical to work swiftly here, as the paint dries quickly! - Lay cardstock flat on the surface of the water.
- Pick up the paper and lay on paper towels to dry (paint side up).
Note: Excess paint in the tray dries into a thin film on the surface of the water. Use a toothpick or scrap paper to scoop up the film and discard. - Repeat steps 4–7 with additional cardstock, blank cards, or envelopes.
- Once the paper is dry, it may be slightly warped from the water. Lay a heavy book or two on the paper and let sit overnight. The paper should be flat by morning.
- Now use your handmade marbled paper for any project you like!
